Now you know why I haven’t been posting…
I have been feeling rather nauseated and tired. The first trimester yucks are here in full swing.
Hopefully I will get a photo of our garden up this week. I can’t say it is weed free but I am keeping up fairly well. My favorite weed strategy is putting newspaper topped with grass clippings between all the rows (something I picked up from my mom). It really keeps nasty weeds at bay and cuts my weed pulling/hoeing work in half.

Congratulations on the pregnancy! Thank you for the tip about gardening; we are going to try that. Do you dry the grass out first (to avoid seeds) or does putting it on top of newspaper take care of that? Thanks! Kelly from Magnum Opus.

Thanks Kelly!
We put the grass clippings right on the newspaper as we empty the grass catcher. They dry out to hay like substance. If the weather gets too dry you may have to hose the papers/grass down (unless you have added several mowings of clippings) otherwise your papers may start to blow away
The best thing is the paper tills right into the soil after it has “composted” over the summer with the grass.

Congratulations!
I suspected and almost said something when I was with you last
Have you told the goslings yet? I remember the great Christmas present gosling #6 was to them.

Thank you for letting me know about the grass clippings. That is good to know that you till the paper into the soil too. If you get a moment, please let me know when you till. It sounds like you do so in the fall? Can you tell I am new at this? We had someone till our garden this spring and I think that my father’s friend (a man who has been giving me tips) tills each spring and not in the fall, but maybe you do both? Don’t worry if you don’t post again on this; I know what it is like to be pregnant in the heat! God Bless. Kelly.

We usually till both in the spring and fall but I think spring tilling only is pretty normal.
The weather here has been so mild and beautiful. Hardly had to turn on the air at all! But I do know what you mean about summer pregnancies.

I love using newspapers for mulching/keeping the weeds down as well. We don’t collect our grass clippings but I use other weeds that I have pulled up and it works basically the same way.

Getting back late here, but thanks for the tilling reply. I am just reading a book now about organic pest control (something really likes my basil and peppers!) and many times the book mentions fall tilling. Hope the pregnancy is going well! Just read about the canning; good for you! God Bless. Kelly.
